Ilhéus
Ilhéus - the historical name is 'Saõ Jorge dos Ilhéus' - is on the same latitude (15° south) as Madagascar and the north coast of Australia. It is located in the south of the state of Bahia, also known as "the Cocoa Coast". The city numbers 250,000 inhabitants. Its most famous son is Jorge Amado, the internationally renowned novelist. He now lives in Salvador, but the house in Ilhéus where he spent his childhood is now home to a small museum and cultural center.
Take a stroll round the city, and quench your thirst like Jorge Amado in the famous 'Vesuvio'. Experience the sights and sounds of the narrow, car-free side streets or visit the cathedral. Ilhéus is a lively Bahian city with many, many facets.
Ever seen the film 'Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands'? Then you’ll know what awaits you here.
